We, as humans, are composed of body, mind and soul - and if any of these is out of balance, the other two cannot function optimally. According to Dr. Maribeth Loynes, board-certified OB/GYN with over two decades of practice experience and owner of Morehead City's Wellness for Women, you can have the fittest physique with a wellbalanced diet and exercise routine but still fall short of being healthy if stress management and coping mechanisms are neglected. It is equally important to nourish your brain and nervous system with proper nutrition, rest, and relaxation. With clear thought processes-not muddied by fatigue, stress, or anxiety-we can make better choices for our health in terms of nutrition, exercise and productivity. See below for tactical tips on strong mental and physical health ... straight from a pro!
PHYSICAL HEALTH:
1. Positive Internal Dialogue — Belief in oneself is vital to achieving any goal-health is no different.
2. Patience — Recognize that a healthy body is a journey, not a destination. Our bodies and needs evolve over our lifespan. The way we take care of ourselves must also evolve, and these lessons often take time.
3. Avoid Comparison — Healthy bodies are not a competition. Due to the effects of both nature and nurture, we all face different challenges with our bodies. For example, Marie may maintain a healthy weight but struggle to build muscle, while Ruth may lift heavy daily but struggle with the addition of fat and muscle. Comparing ourselves does not serve either our bodies or our minds well.
MENTAL HEALTH:
1. Solid, reproducible sleep schedule — No explanation needed - get that sleep!
2. Reliable method of stress relief — Whether it's pillow screaming, a long walk on the beach or another activity, find a "happy place" where your mind can settle.
3. Well-balanced diet — Ensure you consume adequate protein, fats and carbohydrates. What you eat directly impacts the way your brain operates.
"Good health is in your control — you just have to get started. I love helping people identify where they are in their journey and forming a plan to move toward health. That plan may involve nutrition, exercise, mental health, gut health, stress management or a combination of these. Ask for guidance, stop talking and start doing." - Dr. Loynes
