Captain Byron Shults has spent over a decade navigating the waters of Bogue Sound and wanted a way for ambitious anglers to get offshore in a smaller boat to experience the ocean in the same way. Through his charter company, Going Bogue Outdoors, Capt. Byron puts his clients in charge of their catch, bringing them to hot spots with top-of-the-line tackle properly rigged. His goal? To put the rod in the hands of the angler and teach them along the way – influencing their outlook on fishing, helping them engage with their families and friends away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, and serving as an information source on all things fishing.
Going Bogue Outdoors is run solely onboard, without a mate, and – while Capt. Byron is prepared to be as involved as possible – he also knows when to step away and let his clients handle certain aspects of the fishing process. After all, the best way to learn is to jump in head first!
It's clear that Capt. Byron is grateful to be a business owner in Carteret County. He notes, "I have been met with great support in all aspects of my business – from founding, to growing, to maintaining. The people in this county have been huge supporting agents of Going Bogue Outdoors, and I am forever grateful for that."
THE FALL FORECAST FROM CAPT. BYRON
"The fall season is – hands down – my favorite time of year, as each trip is guaranteed to produce a great bounty. On half day trips, the light tackle casting and fly fishing action is excellent for spanish mackerel and false albacore. For 3/4 days, the gag grouper bite is prime, with fish moving closer to the beach and feeding heavily before spawning in the wintertime. Lastly, full day trips are stacked with solid trolling action for wahoo."
