Nothing says fall on the coast quite like a table covered in muddy shells and an oyster knife in hand. Here's how to shuck like a local, plus where our community says to get your oysters this year. We reached out to Creighton McNeil, owner of Native Oyster Co., for his tips on how to shuck an oyster like a pro.
Creighton's Step-by-Step Shucking Guide
- Grab an oyster knife and a hand towel.
- With the towel in your palm, hold the oyster flat or press it flat on your table.
- Locate the hinge — the pointed end where the two shells meet.
- Wedge the tip of the knife into the hinge at a slight angle.
- Apply steady pressure while twisting the blade until you feel the hinge pop.
- Slide and separate the two shells.
- Run the knife under the oyster to cut it loose.
- Add your toppings — a squeeze of lemon, cocktail sauce, horseradish, whatever you like.
