15 Takeaways for a Better Mindset

By: Mary Cheatham King / 16 Jul 2025

Mary Cheatham asked her coach, Jordan Freed, to come to NC and "blow our minds" with a course on mindset. From big dreams like our billion dollar bucket list to actionable items like an "awesome jar", we shortened his class into 15 takeaways you can read through any time you need a dose of inspiration. (Spoiler alert - this class did, in fact, blow our minds).

FIFTEEN TAKEAWAYS FOR A BETTER MINDSET

On controlling the things you can't control:

  1. Attaching yourself to things you cannot control leads to a path of misery.
  2. When you're focused on the things you can't control, you lose control of the things you can. You can only control the way you think, feel and act – everything else is a contribution or a condition.
  3. If you don't have control over something, you should be fully engaged, but 100% unattached.

On decision making:

  1. Choices are about options. Decisions are about selection.
  2. Disciplines require conscious effort. Habits are decisions made automatically.
  3. "The life you're building is shaped by the decisions you consistently make."
  4. Ask yourself: What would the hero version of me do right now?

On big thinking:

  1. Happiness is not a circumstance, it's a choice.
  2. What thoughts create inflammation vs. what thoughts create ignition?
  3. What is your definition of enough? Oftentimes, it's a lot more attainable than you think.
  4. Rituals of review reveal results (see the awesome jar example below)
  5. "The secret to having it all is knowing that you already do." - Oliver Sinz
  6. What would you be grateful for if you were to NOT be intentionally grateful for it, it would go away?

On leading yourself well:

  1. Keeping promises to yourself is the first step in being a good leader. What is one promise that you consistently break with yourself that, if you were to keep it, would change your whole life forever?
  2. It's not happening to me, it's happening for me. What is this situation meant to teach me?

What you can do now:

  1. Create an "awesome jar" for your household! Set a jar on the counter where you can easily see it. Whenever someone does something that can be celebrated (big or small!), write it down on a post-it with the date, fold it, and put it in the awesome jar. Every few months when you're sitting at the dinner table, pull out the jar and begin reading through the awesome moments you have had together and bask in the memories!
