It’s the first week of June! As we spend more of our days outside, we thought it would be a good time to share some sunscreen tips from the experts at New Visage Laser Skin Care Center right here in downtown Morehead City. Picking an effective and comfortable sunscreen can be tricky — and there’s so many to choose from! Here’s what they say the differences in ingredients actually mean:
Physical sunblocks sit on top of the skin, creating an instant barrier that filters out UVA/UVB rays using minerals like zinc and titanium. Look for sunscreens that contain these ingredients for broad spectrum protection.
Chemical sunscreens contain chemical compounds that absorb into the skin that turn UV rays into heat, and take at least 20 minutes to become effective. Chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate and octocrylene will be present in chemical sunscreens.
Skin care is essential during the summer months! Owner, Jen Beasley, gave us the lowdown on her routine secrets for morning, noon and night to keep a youthful glow!
Morning is a crucial time to protect our skin. Jen recommends a topical Vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant that not only protects from environmental (read: sun) damage, but repairs damage that has already been done.
PRODUCTS JEN LOVES: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic and ZO 10% Vitamin C serum
Your time spent on the boat requires uncomplicated skin care. Applying a physical sunblock is a must, as it instantly starts protecting your skin without any wait time (see above).
PRODUCTS JEN LOVES: Elta MD’s Sheer 50+ – waterproof and the sheerest zinc sunblock she has ever come across.
The best time to restore our skin is when the sun goes down. On days that you have worn sunblock on the boat, it’s best to gently cleanse the skin twice before you go to bed – once to remove sunscreen and makeup, and one more time for a deeper clean and exfoliation (give Zo Skin Health’s Exfoliating Cleanser a try!). Follow up with your favorite serums and creams, like retinols – a favorite for nighttime!
JEN’S PRO TIP: If you know a full day in the sun is in your future, it’s best to back off your nighttime retinols and AHA products at least 24 hours in advance to minimize the effects of the sun.
