This Beaufort-based company started as a nap-time endeavor and has blossomed into a full-time gig for owner Danielle Vollnogle. Years ago, Danielle was in search of the “perfect” leather tote – a piece that could go with any outfit, hold a variety of items and withstand wear and tear, all while looking beautiful at the same time. After an unsuccessful search for the perfect tote, she decided to take matters into her own two hands. Danielle created her own leather tote, with materials all sourced from the United States.
Thus, the first Cope & Co. leather bag was born.
And when her son, Jack, was born a few years later, Danielle decided to spend his nap-times hand crafting her signature leather goods from the comfort of her living room, all from those same USA-sourced materials. While her workshop and product demand have expanded, Danielle still runs Cope & Co. as a one-woman show (with the occasional help from her supportive husband and curious toddler hands!).
Danielle’s leather pieces –all made from vegetable tanned leather– range from the original tote (now offered in various sizes), belts, clutches, wristlets, wallets and more. No two the same, a leather item from Cope & Co. will change as you do. She writes:
“Just as we change with age and life experience, so will our premium vegetable tanned leather. The leather will patina beautifully as you enjoy it in your everyday life. The photo (below) captures some of the stages your bag will go through on its journey.”
Another unique asset to Danielle’s pieces? A hand stamped customized message on each order by request – initials, names, quotes, anything that makes your piece special and unique to you. Whether you’re gifting a Leather Minimalist Wallet to your dad for his birthday or purchasing a the Medium Leather Tote Handbag to personally carry around town, adding a sweet note, message of hope or your initials only adds to these already special staple items.
We are so thankful that this nap-time hobby turned into one of our favorite local small businesses. Danielle pours her heart and soul (and a hefty dose of elbow grease) into each leather piece she crafts, and it results in beautiful, timeless, durable and classic goods for anyone to enjoy for years to come.
